Moving is always a bit chaotic. With packing and logistics, you can forget a few common to-dos. The pre-closing home buying to-do's below covers items to include on your checklist.
Register for School
If you have school-aged kids, contact the school to ask what documentation is required for registration. You typically must have documentation from the previous school. You may also need copies of medical history and verification of residency. Lastly, the process might need to be done at the school.
Change Auto Insurance
Contact your insurance provider and give them the updated address. Your rate could change as a result. If you are changing states, you must also register your cars in the new state and apply for a state-issued drivers license. Many have reciprocity so you may not need to complete a test.
To ensure that you receive all of your mail, remember to change your address and have your mail forwarded. This is completed with the US Post Office either online or at their branch. It is intended as a transitional solution and therefore continues for a limited length of time. You must contact everyone and notify them of the new address. This includes credit card companies, insurance providers, employers, and family.
Call Utility Services
In a reasonable time prior to closing, call utility companies to cancel existing services and initiate new services. Remember electricity, oil or gas, Internet and cable, and telephone services. For usage based utilities, the companies normally take a meter reading to start or end services. If you do not start service at your new address, then they may physically shut down the utility connection and assess a fee to visit and restart it later. Therefore, it is critical to touch base with them in advance to avoid disruption of service and added costs.
Other Pre-closing Home Buying To-do's
The above pre-closing home buying to-do's include merely a few key tasks to take care of prior to closing on a next house. There may be more to address depending on your personal situation. For example, if you maintain a business, you may need to register that. For help with your real estate purchase, call Bradford Pratt at REMAX on the Charles.
